Building an Authentic Brand from the Inside Out

Jeff Bezos asks, “What do people say about you when you’re not in the room?” Personal branding is more than a buzzword—it’s your reputation. If you’re not actively shaping it, someone else is.

For much of my life, I followed others’ expectations without asking, “What do I want?” Motherhood changed that, leading me to reflect on who I am and what I value. When my therapist asked, “What are your values?” it was a turning point. Over the past six years, I’ve lived by those values, shaping my personal brand.

Start with Values
To build your personal brand, start by defining your values. Brené Brown’s values exercise is a great tool for uncovering what matters most to you. Once you align your actions with your values, your brand will naturally reflect who you truly are.

Trust, Presence, and Energy Matter
Living your values also means honouring your commitments—trust is built by doing what you say. Seek feedback from trusted friends to understand how others see you. When I asked for feedback, I sent an email like this:

Subject: Your Insight Needed
Dear [Friend],
I’m exploring my Unique Ability, which highlights my key talents and traits. I’d love your help identifying mine. Could you share what you think are my unique skills, characteristics, and what you rely on me for? Your feedback would mean a lot!

Best,
[Your Name]

Equally important is the energy you bring to interactions. People may forget what you said, but they’ll remember how you made them feel. Be present in conversations and meetings and protect your energy when necessary. Whether uplifting others or being fully engaged, the energy you project matters.

Online Presence
Lastly, be intentional about your online presence. Ensure your social media reflects your values and authenticity, rather than seeking likes. Ask yourself: Does this post reflect who I am? Is it aligned with my values?

Your personal brand reflects the inner work you do. As you grow, your brand will evolve. By embracing your values, seeking feedback, and showing up authentically, you’ll build a brand that’s truly you.
